Cinderella - 2003

The all-time children's favourite, "Cinderella" complete with fairy Godmother, fairies and elves, is the latest offering by Hyde Heath Drama Group. However, this is not quite the typical version of the perennial fairytale: true Cinderella (played by Wendy Ward) lives with her father Baron Hardup (Rodney Edmeades) at Hardup Hall where her Ugly Sisters make her life a misery; yes, she does go to the ball in a pair of glass slippers where she meets the handsome Prince Charming; and faithful to pantomime tradition Prince Charming is played by a girl (Moira Little) and the Ugly Sisters by men (Charles Pain and Howard Elson). But this quirky production introduces a new character to the plot, the villainous Demon King of Pandemonium, masquerading as the wicked Squire Rudolph (Adam Wood), intent on world domination. His evil plan is to seize Hardup Hall, marry Cinderella by fair means or foul, and rule Fairytaleland forever. At one stage in the action Rudolph very nearly succeeds.
Yet in the end virtue conquers evil, the Prince marries Cinderella … and everyone lives happily ever after. All except Buttons (Chris Kay), but then that's pantomime.
